Engagement Through Community Connections
Fostering a sense of community amongst students, staff, and the broader North Vancouver municipalities is one of our primary focuses at Mountainside. There is much research on the impact of sense of belonging and connection to community on a youth overall health and wellbeing, and our goal at Mountainside is to build a sense of connection, for all youth, both at school and in our broader community. The goal being that by engaging our youth in community building both in and outside of school, their level of engagement both in school and life outside school will improve. Our current areas of focus fostering community are:
Self-Efficacy Class
Focus on community amongst the students in each cohort
Mandatory class that all students at Mountainside are enrolled in, focussing on relationships, self-regulation, wellness, and decision making
All students in the school are in this class at the same time
Each Teacher Advisor teaches this class to the 15-17 students that are on their advisor list
Value Added Activities
Supported by several community partners and community members, students are offered opportunities to engage in activities and groups that support areas of interest beyond those that the school would traditionally be able to offer, including:
Art Therapy
Music Therapy
Restorative Justice
Game Ready Fitness
Community Partnerships
Through established partnerships with agencies such as Vancouver Coastal Health, Ministry of Children and Family Development, Hollyburn Family Services, North Vancouver RCMP, City and District Youth Service Providers, and others, the sense of community for our students is able to extended beyond the walls of the school
